Planning Ahead After Receiving a Diagnosis of Dementia

  • Ensure you are receiving what you are entitled to for example Attendance allowance or PIP
  • Ensure you have a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) in place. If you are assessed as lacking capacity, you will no longer be able to make an LPA.
  • An LPA has two types Financial and Health and Welfare it is important to do both. Alzheimer's Society have a comprehensive factsheet on LPA.
  • Confirm your will is up to date.
  • You can make an advance statement to record your wishes for medical treatment. It is not legally binding, but it should still be considered.
  • If you can drive, you may not have to stop driving right away. You must tell DVLA in England and Wales or DVA in Northern Ireland about your dementia.
  • You may be able to carry on working. Talk to your employer about reasonable adjustments. If you stop working or work fewer hours, you may be able to claim financial support from the government.
